Custom Transmission Cooler
Since my recent transmission problems have left me frustrated and feeling dumb, I decided to go ahead and rebuild it and to do it right. One of the ways to do it right for me was to give it plenty of cooling. To do this I decided to pull the cooling lines to the radiator and plum them into a dedicated cooler and give it its own electric fan and thermostat.
Since my hydroboost was taking up a lot of room on the driver’s side of the engine compartment, and the transmission cooler lines were already configured to run down the passenger side, I decided to put the cooler on that side. Only problem was, I had put almost all of my ignition and charging devices on the same location. I wanted to clean that up a bit anyway so I cleared everything off and started rewiring everything on that side and relocated everything. Some of the relocations also came with an upgrade
Inner Fender Mods
Cooler shroud
I formed the shroud from 18 ga. mild steel sheet metal. I shaped it like it is so that air vortexes wouldn’t form inside of it. The fan turns on and off like it should. At first the fan was rotating backwards. I reversed polarity and the fan turns correctly now.
Since the fender was pretty week from cutting a huge hole in it I built a 1″x1″ frame to bolt to the inner fender for strength. It is pretty solid.
Transmission Lines and Fittings
I used 3/8″ steel lines for the entire circuit. The stock are 5/16″. I figured with the amount of bends and transitions from hard to soft lines that there would be too much restriction for the stock size. They flow well. I actually sprang a leak on one of the fittings. It was a lot of fun tightening that up while getting sprayed with stupid hot trans fluid!
The thermostat for the fan is illustrated below. There is a gauge sender/thermostat manifold that is sold for around $40. I think that is highly priced for what it does. I just used a 3/8″ NPT copper “T” fitting.
Transmission Filter
The filter is a Be Cool model that uses the same filter as the engine. It is a remote mount that I plumed into the return line to the transmission.
I mounted it to the firewall with a custom plate that I welded studs to so that it sat as flush to the floor as possible. I still need to fab a shield for it since it does sit behind the passenger front tire and could get hit with something large enough to damage it. Plus it will keep the dirt and crap off of it.
